Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation is a minimally-invasive technique

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is used to treat large varicose veins by  closing the main superficial veins (long and short saphenous veins) that are abnormal and feeding pressure into varicose veins.

The catheter delivers energy in the form of high frequency current to generate heat, thus permanently closing the abnormal vein. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance and is minimally-invasive leaving only a small incision less than 5mm in size. The closed vein forms an internal scar and this dissolves over the following 12 months.

This technique is highly effective with equivalent or improved success to surgery. Radiofrequency Ablation also has equivalent success to endovenous laser therapy but with less post-operative pain. Success is >95% in the long-term.
