The latest generation of treatments for varicose veins and surface veins allow treatment of abnormal veins with injections alone that allow treatment in our office with minimal recovery required.
Traditional surgical treatment for varicose veins including stripping, were largely replaced by the “thermal ablation” techniques more than a decade ago. These procedures including Radiofrequency Ablation and Endovenous Laser Therapy, use an energy source to generate heat that is used to “cauterise” the abnormal vein. This vein is then scarred and healed by the body’s normal healing processes. The heat inherent in these procedures is painful and requires either general anaesthesia or multiple injections of Saline and local anaesthetic along the length of the vein to be treated.
The advantage of glue-based procedures is that the polymerisation (setting) of the glue to painless, thus allowing treatment with usually a single injection of local anaesthetic. This makes VenaSeal particularly well suited to in office treatment. One or both legs can usually be treated in under an hour. With the absence of any general anaesthetic or sedation, this treatment allows immediate return to normal activity including work and driving.
